Buying an adult game from an established store is as safe as buying any other game online. The stores covered here are real companies that have been operating for years, and most of them work directly with the developers whose games they sell. The actual risks are narrower than people expect: altered files on piracy sites, fake uploads on open platforms, and privacy.
This page says who runs each of the main stores, lists the risks that are documented, and gives a short routine for checking a download.
Key points
- The established stores (Steam, GOG, itch.io, JAST USA, MangaGamer, DLsite, Nutaku) are legitimate businesses.
- “Is the store safe?” and “is this file safe?” are two different questions. On curated stores they have the same answer. On open platforms they do not.
- Most documented malware in games comes from pirated copies.
- An antivirus warning on a small indie game is often a false alarm, but it should be checked and never just dismissed.
Who runs each store
| Store | Run by | Since | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Valve (United States) | 2003 | The largest PC game store. Adult games are sold under an “Adult Only” label that is hidden unless the customer turns it on |
| GOG | CD Projekt group (Poland) | 2008 | A store for games without copy protection. Sells a smaller range of adult titles |
| itch.io | itch.io (United States), founded by Leaf Corcoran | 2013 | An open marketplace where anyone can publish |
| JAST USA | JAST USA (San Diego, United States) | 1996 | A publisher and store for officially translated Japanese games |
| MangaGamer | A joint venture of Japanese game developers | 2008 | A publisher and store for officially translated Japanese games |
| DLsite | EISYS (Japan) | 1996 | Japan’s main store for self-published games, comics and audio |
| Nutaku | Aylo (Montreal, Canada) | 2015 | A platform for browser, download and mobile adult games, many free to play |

Store by store
Is itch.io safe?
itch.io launched in March 2013 and hosted more than a million products by late 2024. Payments are handled by PayPal or Stripe.
What makes itch.io different is that it is open. Anybody can publish there, and nobody reviews a game before it goes up. That is why the site is valuable to small developers, and it is also why some bad files get through. itch.io runs automated checks and puts suspicious uploads into a manual review queue. Long-standing community members describe a steady stream of malicious uploads, often from hijacked accounts, that are caught and removed.
The practical answer: the store is safe, and each download deserves a look. A game with a long comment history, an active developer and many ratings is a very different case from a page created yesterday.
Is Steam safe?
Steam reviews games before release, and the review is a strong filter. It is not perfect. In February 2025 Valve removed a free game called PirateFi after finding that it contained malware, and warned the people who had downloaded it. Cases like that are rare, and Valve’s response was to tell affected customers directly.
For adult games in particular, Steam hides anything labelled “Adult Only” until the customer opts in through store preferences.
Is JAST USA legit?
Yes. JAST USA was founded in 1996, which makes it one of the oldest companies selling Japanese adult games in English. It is based in San Diego, California. It licenses games from Japanese developers, translates them and sells them through its own store under several labels, including JAST BLUE for boys’ love titles.
Is MangaGamer legit?
Yes. MangaGamer was set up in 2008 as a joint venture of Japanese developers, with the purpose of selling official English versions of their own games abroad. It has since published games from many other Japanese studios. Because the rights holders are involved, buying there supports the people who made the game.
Is DLsite safe?
Yes. DLsite has operated since 1996 and is run by the Japanese company EISYS. It reported more than 9 million users worldwide in 2022 and supports more than a dozen languages.
One thing to know before you buy: DLsite has been affected by card network restrictions. In April 2024 it suspended payments by Visa, Mastercard and American Express across its platforms. Payment options have changed more than once since, so look at what is offered at checkout on the day.
Is Nutaku legit?
Yes. Nutaku launched in 2015 and is owned by Aylo, a large adult entertainment company based in Montreal. It reported 50 million registered accounts in early 2020. Many of its games are free to play and earn money through in-game purchases, so the thing to watch there is spending, as with any free-to-play game.
The risks that are actually documented
Pirated copies
This is where most of the real damage happens. A pirated game is a copy whose installer has passed through unknown hands, and adding malware to it is easy.
Kaspersky’s researchers documented a campaign they named StaryDobry, in which altered installers for popular games were uploaded to torrent sites in September 2024 and activated over the following New Year holiday. The installers put a cryptocurrency miner on victims’ machines. The games in that case were mainstream titles, and the method works the same way for any game.
Adult games are pirated heavily, and the sites that share them are popular. A file from one of those sites comes with no guarantee from the developer or anyone else.
Fake or hijacked uploads on open platforms
On a platform where anyone can publish, some uploads are bait. The usual pattern is a page copied from a real game, or a real developer’s account that has been taken over, offering a file that is not the game. Platforms remove these when they find them. The gap between upload and removal is the risk.
Privacy
Many people’s main worry is who will see the purchase. Three facts help:
- Bank statements show the store or its payment processor as the merchant, not the title of the game.
- Steam lets you mark individual games as private so that they do not appear on your profile.
- Email receipts usually include the game’s title, so a shared mailbox is the more common way a purchase is seen.
Overspending in free-to-play games
Free-to-play adult games use the same purchase mechanics as any other free-to-play game. Set a limit before you start, as you would elsewhere.
Why antivirus warnings are common, and what to do
Small games often trigger warnings even when nothing is wrong. Two reasons account for most cases.
First, Windows checks the reputation of a file as well as its contents. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns about applications that few people have downloaded or that are not signed by a known publisher. A new game from a solo developer fits that description exactly.
Second, antivirus products can flag the way some game engines package their files, because malware has used similar packaging.
A warning might be a false alarm. Check it properly before deciding:
- Get the file from the official page. Follow the link from the developer’s own site or verified store page.
- Look at the developer. How old is the account, how many games has it published, and do the comments read like real players?
- Scan the file. Upload it to VirusTotal, which checks it against dozens of antivirus engines. One or two generic detections on an indie game is common. Many detections, or any that name a specific family of malware, is a reason to stop.
- Keep your system’s protection on. If the instructions for a game tell you to turn off your antivirus, treat that as a warning sign.
- Use a separate email address for store accounts if privacy matters to you.
A quick comparison of risk
| Source | Who checked the file | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Curated store (Steam, GOG, JAST USA, MangaGamer) | The store or the publisher | Very low |
| Established developer on an open platform (itch.io, DLsite) | The developer; the platform’s automated checks | Low |
| New or unknown account on an open platform | Automated checks only | Check before running |
| Piracy site or file-sharing link | Nobody | High |
How this page was put together
The facts about each company come from their published histories, and the malware cases come from the security researchers and news outlets that reported them, all listed under Sources. This page does not contain test purchases or first-hand reviews of the stores.
It was written on 2 October 2026. Payment options in particular change often, so the DLsite section will be updated when its checkout changes. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Is itch.io safe?
itch.io is a legitimate store that has run since 2013, and paying through it is safe. The risk is in individual downloads: anyone can upload to itch.io, so a file is only as trustworthy as the developer who made it. Check the developer's history and scan the file before running it.
Is JAST USA legit?
Yes. JAST USA is a publisher founded in 1996 and based in San Diego, California. It licenses Japanese games, translates them and sells them through its own store.
Is MangaGamer legit?
Yes. MangaGamer was set up in 2008 as a joint venture of Japanese game developers to sell official English versions of their games. It works directly with the rights holders.
Is DLsite safe?
DLsite is a legitimate Japanese store that has operated since 1996 and reported more than 9 million users in 2022. Its card payment options have changed over time, so check which payment methods are offered at checkout.
Can adult games give you a virus?
A game from an official store is very unlikely to. The documented cases of malware in games come mostly from pirated copies, where the installer has been altered, and occasionally from fake games uploaded to open stores before they are caught.
Will an adult game purchase show on my bank statement?
The statement shows the name of the store or its payment processor, not the name of the game. What that name looks like differs from store to store, so check the store's help pages before buying if this matters to you.
