Yes. Patreon allows NSFW and adult content, on pages that are marked Adult/18+ and within a set of rules that were last revised in March 2026. Nudity and sexual content are permitted behind the paywall. A short list of themes is banned everywhere, and nothing explicit may appear where the public can see it.
This page sets out what the current rules allow, what they prohibit, how they are enforced, and what an adult game developer in particular needs to check. It reflects Patreon’s published policy as of October 2026. Rules change, so read Patreon’s own pages before relying on any of it.
Key points
- Adult work is allowed on pages categorised as Adult/18+.
- Explicit material must stay behind the paywall. Banners, tier descriptions, previews and free posts must be clean.
- Banned everywhere: incest, bestiality, non-consensual intimate imagery, and sexual deepfakes of real people.
- Illustrated and animated characters must be unmistakably adults.
- Adult creators must verify that they are over 18. Members confirm that they are.
- Most of these rules trace back to Patreon’s payment processors.
What the rules allow
Patreon published its finalised policy update on 16 March 2026. It sorts content into three groups: what is not allowed anywhere on Patreon, what is limited to pages categorised as Adult/18+, and what may appear on both Adult/18+ and All Audiences pages.
| Content | All Audiences page | Adult/18+ page |
|---|---|---|
| Depictions of nudity and sexual activity | No | Yes, behind the paywall |
| Non-explicit intimate activity without nudity | Yes | Yes |
| Mature or suggestive discussion as part of a wider story | Yes | Yes |
| Sex education without depictions of sexual activity | Yes | Yes |
| The themes listed in the next section | No | No |
What is banned everywhere
Marking a page Adult/18+ does not make everything permissible. According to the March 2026 update, these are not allowed on any page:
- Depictions of incest.
- Depictions of bestiality.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery.
- Synthetic sexual imagery of real people. This covers AI-generated or manipulated images that make it appear “that a real person was in a sexual situation that did not really occur”.
There is also a rule about how characters look. In illustrated and animated adult work, the subjects must appear unmistakably adult. Patreon says it judges this on three things: “physical development and physical features”, the “context provided with the imagery”, and “material objects or settings traditionally associated with specific minor age ranges”.
A stated age does not settle it. A character described as an adult but drawn to look like a child fails the rule, and a school setting or childlike props count against the work.
The paywall rule
This rule is easy to break by accident. Explicit work is allowed, but only where paying members can see it.
Patreon’s update says that works featuring nudity, sexual activity or sexually explicit imagery must stay behind the paywall, and that public-facing areas “must not include that material”. It lists what counts as public:
- profile images
- banners
- tier descriptions
- previews
- posts available to free members
In practice, the public face of an Adult/18+ page has to be safe for work. The explicit material goes in posts for paid tiers.
Age checks and consent
Patreon’s help centre explains that these requirements come from its payment processors.
- Creators. Processors such as Mastercard and Visa require Patreon to have every creator who shares sexually explicit work, or work that includes nudity, verify that they are over 18. This applies to creators in the Adult/18+ category.
- Members. Anyone subscribing to an Adult/18+ page is asked to confirm that they are over 18.
- Real people. Creators in the Adult/18+ category must obtain written consent from any real person who appears visually in their work.
The third point matters less for drawn or rendered games and a great deal for photography and video.
Does Patreon allow AI-generated adult content?
The published rules do not prohibit AI-generated work as a category. What they prohibit is synthetic imagery of real people in sexual situations, as quoted above.
An AI-generated adult work therefore has to pass the same tests as any other: the page is Adult/18+, the explicit material is behind the paywall, the characters are unmistakably adult, the banned themes are absent, and no real person is depicted. Patreon’s policy on AI has moved more than once, so check the content guidelines for the current wording.
How Patreon’s position has changed
Patreon has allowed adult work for most of its history, and has tightened the rules several times. Wikipedia’s article on Patreon records the main dates.
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| May 2013 | Patreon is founded |
| March 2014 | Creators of sexual content can no longer be paid through PayPal on Patreon |
| July 2016 | PayPal payments return for adult creators |
| October 2017 | New restrictions on adult content, followed by protest from adult creators |
| June 2018 | Some adult creators are suspended |
| March 2025 | Guidelines allow nudity and suggestive imagery on pages marked Adult/18+, with consent requirements |
| March 2026 | The current rules are finalised |
The pattern is the same each time: a change in what payment companies will accept, followed by a change in Patreon’s rules.
What adult game developers should check
Patreon is not a store. It is a membership platform: supporters pay monthly, and the developer posts builds, updates and extras for them. Adult game developers use it to fund work in progress. The rules above apply to a game exactly as they apply to artwork.
Five checks cover most of the risk.
- The game’s themes. Incest is banned everywhere on Patreon, and it is a common theme in adult games. This is the same theme that led to games being removed from Steam in July 2025. Non-consensual content and bestiality are also out.
- How the characters look. “Unmistakably adult” is judged on appearance and setting, not on a stated age.
- The public page. Banner, profile image, tier names, tier descriptions and any free post must contain nothing explicit. That includes screenshots.
- Free builds. A demo posted for free members is public. It has to be clean, or it has to go in a paid tier.
- The category. Mark the page Adult/18+ and complete age verification before posting adult work.
The wider question of which themes payment companies accept is covered in how payment processors decide which adult games can exist.
What it costs
Patreon takes a percentage of what a creator earns, and payment processing fees come on top. According to Wikipedia, its commission was between 8 and 12 per cent depending on the plan, and in June 2025 it announced a rate of 10 per cent.
There is a second cost for memberships bought on an iPhone. Apple required Patreon to move to its in-app purchase system, which carries a fee of up to 30 per cent on new memberships bought through the iOS app. Macworld reported that Patreon gave creators a tool to raise prices in the app to cover it, and that memberships bought on the Patreon website are not affected.
The risk, and the alternatives
The main risk of building on Patreon is that the rules can change with little warning and that enforcement decisions are Patreon’s alone. A page that complies today may not comply after the next policy revision, and a suspended page loses its income at once.
The alternatives carry the same kind of risk. SubscribeStar, another membership platform used by adult creators, tightened its own content rules in 2026 to satisfy payment processors. Stores have their own rules again.
Whichever platform you use, keep something you control: a website and a mailing list, so that a rule change does not cut you off from the people who support your work. The platforms are compared side by side in where adult games can be sold, and the practical steps of setting up are in how to make an adult game.
Questions
Does Patreon allow NSFW content?
Yes. Patreon allows nudity and sexual content on pages that are marked Adult/18+, as long as the explicit material stays behind the paywall and the work avoids the themes Patreon bans everywhere. The current rules were finalised on 16 March 2026.
What NSFW content is not allowed on Patreon?
Patreon bans depictions of incest and bestiality, non-consensual intimate imagery, and AI-generated or manipulated images that make a real person appear to be in a sexual situation. Characters in illustrated or animated adult work must be unmistakably adults. Explicit material is also not allowed anywhere the public can see it.
Does Patreon allow adult games?
Yes. Adult game developers can use Patreon under the Adult/18+ rules. The game's content has to meet the same rules as any other adult work, and public parts of the page, such as banners, tier descriptions and free posts, cannot show explicit material.
Does Patreon allow AI-generated adult content?
Patreon's rules do not ban AI-generated work as such. They ban synthetic or manipulated imagery that makes a real person appear to be in a sexual situation that did not happen, and AI-generated work has to meet every other Adult/18+ rule.
Do adult creators have to verify their age on Patreon?
Yes. Patreon says its payment processors, including Mastercard and Visa, require every creator who shares sexually explicit work or nudity to verify that they are over 18. Members who subscribe to an Adult/18+ page are asked to confirm that they are over 18.
